90 Ways in 90 Days
90 Ways in 90 Days: A Personal Workshop for Women with Disordered Eating is a comprehensive workshop in book form for women with compulsive eating behaviors of any kind. The complete workshop is a set (series) of three books–a manual, a daily journal, and a group workbook. The full set–all three books–makes a complete 90-day intensive disordered eating program for use in treatment centers or therapy offices. The set is put together so that it can also be used by individuals at any level of motivation for change, either alone or with an individual therapist. Family members or others seeking to better understand someone with an eating disorder have found the series helpful as well.
The 90 Ways in 90 Days manual consists of 90 daily modules with information and practices to enhance understanding of such topics as food behaviors and emotions, eating disorder symptoms, food addiction, increasing motivation, dealing with relapse triggers, body image, mindfulness, eating disorder as illness, self-care, creativity as a wellness tool, 12-Step strategies, stigma, empowerment, women and social roles, psychological trauma, relationships, sense of self, boundaries, relapse prevention, depression, and anxiety. The 90 Ways in 90 Days daily journal and group workbook are coordinated with the manual to allow for practice in important recovery, pacing, and self-support skills.
The 90 Ways in 90 Days Daily Journal contains coordinated daily tracking sheets, called skill sheets, for each day of the program. Learning new behaviors requires understanding what drives the disordered behavior (the one we want to change), taking in new information, and putting the new information into practice. Using the principles of cognitive therapy and guided journaling, the skill sheets guide individualized tracking of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make up and maintain eating disorders.
The 90 Ways in 90 Days Group Workbook contains work sheets for use in a group setting, whether the group is professionally led or a gathering of people there to provide mutual support for each other, such as Eating Disorders Anonymous. The group exercises cover topics like honesty, denial, the effect of eating disorders on the family, relapse prevention, gratitude, management of anger and stress, trauma, boundaries, gender and power issues, media influences, family dynamics, body image, dealing with sabotage, getting to know your real self, grief and loss, and good communication. Stephanie Covington and others have shown that women heal best in connection with other women, but not everyone is ready, willing, or able to engage in group work. The 90 Ways in 90 Days Group Workbook coordinates with the manual and the daily journal. Most of the group practices can be converted to personal journal exercises or done with an individual therapist.
The three books that make up 90 Ways in 90 Days: A Personal Workshop for Women with Disordered Eating were created for simultaneous use and work best as a set. In professionally led intensive outpatient program, each therapist and each participant needs a set of three books. For example, a 10-person group led by two therapists would require 12 sets. For the best experience, an Individual user needs at least the manual and the daily journal.
